Just wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a free terminal emulator to use with Linux.

We are in the process of upgrading our Linux server. The new version of Linux does not support telnet as a standard configuration because of security risk issues and instead recommends ssh. The problem is that the terminal emulator we were using (PowerTerm) does not support ssh so we either need to upgrade at significant cost or find a freeware solution.

I've tried to implement a free solution before and it has always ended in frustration and from what I have seen so far, that hasn't changed. One of the biggest bugaboos is that we have always had Delete implemented for Cancel and it will be disruptive to get users to change to Ctrl-C. (Not to mention that it is a pain to use a two-key function to implement such a simple thing.) We also use multiscreens extensively via the screen command and many emulators do not support that properly. Not to mention that some emulators want to run in color which is just a visual distraction as far as I'm concerned.

I've tried customizing the TERMCAP entries before but that has also always been fruitless so I'm hoping someone out there will be able to say "Oh that's simple, just use xxxx"

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Even though there may be free solutions available, we believe that Anzio is the best telnet program with excellent support.  fP Tech is an authorized reseller and you may contact sales for more information and pricing.

Thanks for the suggestion. Anzio appears to be a full-featured product, (maybe too full-featured because even the "Lite" version looks quite busy), but... I can't get it to work properly - at least not yet.

Again, one of the problems is that we're all accustomed to using DEL instead of CTRL-C to cancel out of a record or menu and that doesn't work. The menu at the bottom says  that DEL is supposed to work but when I press the key I get gibberish characters.

I'm sure that by trial and error I can choose the right emulation mode, set the TERM environmental variable, probably throw in an arcane stty with options but... why do I have to do this. All I want is a monochrome screen with keys and commands (like SCREEN) that work as advertised.

Hopefully someone out there has the super-simple solution I'm after. Something with a generic terminal like ANSI or LINUX.
