First of all, I'd like to say hi to all the old-time fp list people I see here.  I had no idea there was now a filePro message board, and stumbled upon it last night.  I'm glad I did.  Smiley

Now, my problems--and a little background.  I've been out of the fp world for over 4 years now; in fact, I've been out of the working world in general for over 4 years.  (Injuries, illnesses...too long and boring a story to tell.)  So other than working on my web site--which involves no database-oriented programming--I'm not doing anything resembling computing.  Shocked  While still working at my last job, I used 4.8 on a Netware network; prior to that, I'd started with fp back when it was called Profile 16, first on Tandy Xenix and then SCO Xenix.  Ah, the good old days...when I was practically an fp wizard and could make it do everything I needed.

Then there's now...and it's not so pretty.  For one thing, although I have the original media for 4.8N, there's no way I can use it.  I tried dosemu, I tried wine, but couldn't get it to work.  That was some time back, but I recently tried again--same results.  So I've downloaded the 5.0 demo for Linux, and I'm having a lot of problems.  The display consists of dashes and plus signs, instead of graphical lines, and the key mappings are off, i.e., instead of showing [esc esc] to record, [ctrl-c] to break, etc., it shows [save] to record, [break] to break, and so on.  Then there's the rather huge problem of not being able to save files created via the menu.  I can fill in the fields (field heading, length, type), but can't figure out what key(s) to press to save my work.

As I recall, there's some fiddling with termcap to be done...but I'm rustier than the Titanic and don't have a clue what to change.  Right now, $TERM is xterm; I'm on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty); as of now I've only tried installing it on my HP laptop.

One other thing that may or may not be relevant: A while ago (2 months maybe) I tried installing fp on the same laptop and it caused major problems, so after cleaning up I didn't try again until I re-downloaded the demo again a couple days ago.  Could the 30-day trial have something to do with my problems?

Thanks.

I'm not sure, but I think you might have better luck with the filePro 5.6 demo

I have put them up on http://www.fptechforum.org/demo/

the linux file is at http://www.fptechforum.org/demo/lnx_5.6.Demo.tar.gz

If you could, please give that a try and let us know how it goes?

Thanks, Lauren.  I did go ahead and download the newer demo, but before I had a chance to do anything with it a light bulb went off in my head.  While trying to figure out a solution to a [TOTALLY!] different problem, I stumbled upon a way to get my 4.8N version to work.  And since that version allowed multiple users...I'm going with it!  (I'd STRONGLY prefer to use the *nix version, but for my very limited needs at home, I can make do with what I've got.)  I will try the newer demo when I get a chance, just to see how it works out.

Thanks again.
